Middle Years Program

The Middle Year Program (MYP) is for Grade 9 and 10 students and is offered as preparation for the IB Diploma Programme. Based on similar principles, it requires students to engage in the study of languages, sciences, mathematics, and humanities all in an attempt for them to recognize not only the individuality of each of the disciplines but also to understand the co-relation between them. While doing so, emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of how such areas can be extended outside of the classroom in various respects.

Code of Conduct

MYP students are required to respect the Turner Fenton Code of Conduct as well and the MYP Code of Conduct.

The Areas of Interaction - the lens

Five Areas of Interaction, common to all disciplines are incorporated into the teaching so that students become more aware of the interdependence of subject content and the real world. Knowledge is presented as a whole. Skills, self-awareness and the development of personal values are emphasized. The Areas of Interaction provide the framework and themes for all course curricula.

The Areas of Interaction are:

Special Features of MYP

Intercultural Awareness

The Grade 10 Personal Project

The personal project is a significant piece of work produced independently by each Grade 10 MYP student. The project must provide evidence of the students understanding of the Areas of Interaction. Both theme and form are chosen by the student. On termination of the project the student will write a reflection piece and the finished project will be presented and evaluated. Upon successful completion of all course work and the Personal Project a certificate is issued and the student may continue to the Diploma Programme.

Assesment and Evaluation

All evaluation in all subjects are criterion-referenced so that student performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement consistent from one evaluation to another. Grades reflect attainment of knowledge and skills relative to a set of stands equally applied.

Reporting for each subject is based on a point total and measured on a scale 1-7, as for the Diploma Programme. A percentage grade for Ontario reporting is determined through an agreed conversion scale.
