NEW ADMISSION PROCESS FOR IB MIDDLE YEARS AT TURNER FENTON 2012

The following will be the process followed by Turner Fenton Secondary School beginning with entry into Grade 9 for 2012. All other documents become null and void with this new policy.

Rationale for changes:

  • Improve consistency between Turner Fenton Secondary School and Glenforest Secondary School.
  • Improve consistency in the evaluation of students coming from many diverse Grade 8 experiences.

The new process will be a three step operation:

  • Step 1) Attendance at the Information Session held for parents and Grade 8 candidates which will be held on Thursday November 24, 2011 at the school is highly encouraged.
  • Step 2) Completion of Application A, available on line on November 25th and submitted by January 11, 2012, (preferably sent by Board courier in the envelope provided at the Information Meeting).
  • Results from Application A will determine the candidates for step 3.
  • Step 3) The successful candidates from Application A will be invited to write the Admissions Test to be administered at Turner Fenton in one of three sessions: January 21, 2012 (9:00 - 11:00 or 12:30 - 14:30) Results from this test will determine the 232 accepted students (and those (20) on the “wait list”) for the Grade 9 class of September 2012.

All candidates will be informed of the results by the first week in February.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the IB Programmes at Turner Fenton must begin with the Middle Years in Grade 9. No admission is possible beyond Grade 9 unless the student is transferring from an IB Programme elsewhere.

  • You must live NORTH of the 401 in Peel
  • Level 4 in Grade 7 English and Mathematics June Report
  • Evidence of participation in activities both at school and in the community
  • Learning Skills of G or E on Grade 8 November Progress Report
  • Student should be well-rounded
  • NOTE: There is no busing provided for Regional Programs in Peel.
  • Contents of Application A:

    1. Cover Sheet for contact information
    2. Copy of grade 7 Final Report
    3. Copy of November Progress report Grade 8
    4. List of activities, interests, volunteering both inside and outside school

    Application A scoring:

    3 points will be awarded for:

  • Grade 7 - English
  • Grade 7 - Math
  • Grade 7 - Science
  • Grade 8 - Skills development
  • Activities (Total 15 points)

    Based on the best of the total scores, 300 students will be invited to write the Admissions Test on January 21st or 22nd.

    Application B:

    The Test To be based on the outcomes of the Grade 7 Ontario curriculum.

    The test will be skills-based involving the following:

    • English comprehension
    • Math
    • Science
    • Writing (a topic will be given on the day of the test)

    All elements will be criterion referenced and will be based on skills the students will have acquired in Grade 7. No Grade 8 content will be present.The tests will be set with the help of colleagues from the elementary panel out of our area and will be graded by teachers at Turner Fenton Secondary School. In this way we hope to have the fairest Application Process possible for the over 500 applicants we usually receive.

    There will be no teacher references required or accepted.

    All candidates will be notified through their counsellors by Friday February 10, 2012.

    Accepted candidates must formally accept by March 1, 2012(or lose their place) and inform their Home School of their decision so that their regular courses may be removed.

    “Wait List” candidates will then be notified, if there are vacancies on March 1st.\

    After March 9, 2012, no further offers can be made to Peel students.

    Bus to School

    If parents wish to engage them, Bus to School arranges parent funded bussing for students enrolled in the pre IB and IB Program at Turner Fenton Secondary School.
